Jakarta. The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association, or APJII, launched its 2018 Miss Internet Indonesia pageant on Wednesday (10/01).

The pageant has been held to campaign for smart and creative internet usage, combining the conventional beauty pageant with elements of tech and internet literacy.

2017 marked the first year of that the Miss Internet Indonesia pageant expanded nationally after three years of being held exclusively in Bali.

"We want to educate people on how to smartly and creatively use tech. The pageant's contestants won’t be judged based on beauty alone, but will be expected to be able to convey our message of smart internet usage to the people," said Jamalul Izza, head of the Indonesian Internet Providers Association.

Jamalul hopes the pageant can be a way to support various government programs to suppress hate-speech, pornography on the internet and boost the nationalist spirit, as well as positive sentiment in Indonesia through the internet.

"We see a lot of content on the internet motivated by hate, which would then be used to tarnish someone’s name and even governments.  We want to show positive things in social media and lessen the impact of fake news that has been widespread lately. Our hopes for the Miss Internet Indonesia pageant is to spread a positive message and promote internet security in the long run," Jamalul said.

Marsya Gusman, last year’s winner of the Miss Internet Indonesia pageant, said the contest has been an important stepping stone in her career and life.

"I’m grateful that I could contribute towards promoting a smarter usage of the internet. As a country we need to stay competitive in the digital era in order to stay relevant," Marsya said.

After initial registrations, the pageant will then select 50 contestants in total from various cities nationwide to compete. Two final contestants will be chosen and continue on for the Miss Internet Indonesia Grand Final event 2018.

The final event will be held on Nov. 3, 2018 at ICE BSD in Tangerang, Banten. The grand final will choose 2018’s Miss Internet Indonesia and award her with the title of ambassador for APJII for one year, tasking her to promote various government-backed internet campaigns and internet literacy and entrepreneurship.
